
The baobab is the national tree of Madagascar. There are 8 species globally of which 6 are found exclusively in Madagascar. This tree is enormous, reaching heights of 80 feet and a diameter of more than 20 feet. The leaves and fruit are a nutritious sources of food and the trunk stores water which is of vital use in the dry season. The baobab tree is a life source for people and the community. Gatherings such as school, village meetings, and social events often occur in the shade of the baobab.
